Who You Are

You love building and integrating systems and applications around Big Data. You take strong initiative and complete ownership of problems and solutions. You don’t ask your leader What to do, you ask Why and tell him/her what you think should be done. You thrive in a fast-paced environment but you care deeply about the quality of your work. You are obsessed with making sure that products of your work are doing what they are supposed to in production. You proactively seek feedback from the users and stakeholders. You derive much of your energy from working with others. You bring positive attitude to work every day. You are passionate but you leave the ego outside. As the saying goes, you “argue like you're right but listen like you're wrong“.

What You Bring to the Party:

  • 2+ years of experience building backend software using a dynamic programming language (ideally Python).
  • Successful track record working at a startup or a small company (agile & dynamic, wearing many hats, excited to build something new and cool).
  • Working knowledge in the areas of the SQL language, query performance considerations, schema design and ORM.
  • Expert-level understanding of the Linux command-line environment and tools.

Bonus Skills:

  • NoSQL technology such as ElasticSearch, DynamoDB or Hadoop.
  • Experience working with columnar storage technologies.
  • Experience building Big Data ETL and M/R services.
  • Knowledge of best practices in areas of scalable, distributed and redundant system architectures.
  • Exposure to SOA and microservices.
  • Relevant market exposure (Advertising, Marketing).

The Role

You’ll report to the Data Architecture Team Lead and work closely with the other tech teams including Product Development, Data Science, DevOps and Quality Assurance. You’ll work with a number of cutting-edge technologies (Kafka, Spark, Snowflake) and various AWS services. You will architect and develop solutions in areas of distributed computing, data processing and analytics. This role requires a high level of organization, resourcefulness, creativity and collaboration.

The Team

Love for technology and data runs in our veins. We try to adhere to the best practices of SCRUM (see our Tech Blog posts on our Agile Morphing). Like clockwork, we conduct daily stand-ups, sprint review / demo meetings, and retrospectives. We hate thrashing. We want to build things the right way. At the same time we are acutely aware of when need for experimentation or concept-proofing is required and implications of working in that mode at times. We conduct backlog grooming meetings, early project reviews, and blue-sky design sessions. We collaborate very closely with both the Product Management team and the actual users of our software (both internal and external).

We believe in empowering engineers to come up with solutions (not just implement them). At the end of every sprint, engineers demonstrate what they have built to the rest of the team, the Product Management team and other department stakeholders. Every quarter we show off the key features and systems we’ve built to the whole company. Our goal is to continue to innovate quickly while maintaining the highest levels of quality.
