About the Open Data Engineer role
We're innovating, solving big challenges and having fun while doing it. As a member of OpenGov's #NextGenOpenData Services team, you will engage in solving technical challenges from extending OpenGov Open Data platform to take on more complex workflows, to taming complicated data sets, to pushing browsers to their limits with powerful data visualization and analytics.
Have a direct hand in taking OpenGov Open Data platform powered by CKAN - the leading open source open data platform that powers the largest data portals in the world (data.gov, data.gov.uk, europeandataportal.eu, data.humdata.org, etc.) to the next level!
We're looking for folks with can-do attitudes who go above and beyond. You’re a self-starter who can take ideas and quickly iterate to build prototypes and solutions. Our ideal open data engineer has experience delivering high quality, maintainable code to production, implementing both incremental improvements as well as large features and architectural advancements, and interfacing with customers to solve their most complex problems.
Some of the roles you’ll play on our project engagements
• Extending CKAN to support more transactional, streaming, IoT type workloads• Creating dashboards for governments to measure their performance • Developing web portals for governments to engage their citizens more effectively• Building Integration frameworks• Design and develop ETL pipelines from data silos to cloud platform• Work with customers (cities, counties, and state level agencies) to design and develop custom front-end UI for Open Data platform
Responsibilities
• Developing Open Data solutions that meet customer requirements• Working between Python, Java and JavaScript, CSS and HTML  programming languages as part of your role on a project• Developing  draft of workflows for upload, download, harvesting data and connection with databases/platforms.• Working with data (lots of it)• Contributing towards building a great culture in a small team and company
Ideal Candidate Has
• Strong desire to innovate and build world class software that is mission-driven• 1-4 years of experience and a track record of developing high-quality code in a small, agile team• Very strong programming skills in Python• Good programming skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web frameworks and general open source usage• Proficient with working in Terminal and using Bash commands• Experience with RDBMS, including Postgres and ORMs like SQLA, Hibernate, etc.• Experience with NoSQL like MongoDB Linux (Ubuntu/Redhat); AWS• Experience with Agile methods;• Experience working with Web Services• Experience in designing the solutions using Business Analysis and Data Visualization Techniques• Git;• BS/MS in Computer Science preferred• Sound judgment and ability to balance idealism and pragmatism in a fast-paced work environment
